Deep red. Coffee and cocoa complicate ripe red cherry and tobacco aromas on the deep nose. Then rich, dense and suave in the mouth, with smooth tannins and lively acidity providing needed lift to the superripe red fruit flavors. The long finish shows a touch of alcoholic heat and hints of marzipan and peppery spices. Those who don’t mind reds with high octane levels may well rate this wine even higher than I did.

The 2008 is a great classic vintage in Taurasi and the Riserva bottling from Sandro and Enza Lonardo is going to be excellent. The bouquet is deep, nascently complex and very promising, as it delivers a fine blend of black cherries, balsamic tones, chocolate, incipient notes of roasted venison, dark soil tones and a nice touch of black licorice in the upper register. On the palate the wine si deep, full-bodied, pure and rock solid at the core, with excellent focus and grip, ripe, chewy tannins and lovely length and grip on the very well-balanced and still quite primary finish. This will be an absolutely superb example with sufficient bottle age! 2023-2060.
