Walter Hansel Pinot Noir Cahill Lane RRV
|Bottle sizes:||750 ML|
|Appellation:||Russian River Vly|
|Vineyard:||Cahill Lane is a vineyard-designated blend of 3 one-acre blocks that sit next to Stephen Hansel's house on Cahill Lane. The blocks are comprised of 3 separate French clones, and the vines yield a miniscule 2 to 2¼ tons per acre. This wine, more than any of the other Hansel Pinots, is known for its gorgeous floral aromas and dark, inky color.|
|Viticulture:||The fruit is hand harvested and manually sorted-once in the vineyard and once at the sorting table in the winery.|
|Vinification:||The Pinot Noir is destemmed and the whole berries are gravity fed into open top fermenters.|
|Aging:||60% new French oak|
A blend of three clones - Dijon clones 114 and 115, as well as Rochioli material - the 2013 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane has a dark ruby color and a fragrant style with floral and earth tones intermixed with strawberries and black cherries. The sweetness of the tannin as well as the heady glycerin and lushness make for a hedonistic and intellectually satisfying Pinot Noir to drink over the next 7-10 years. Some of the best values in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir emerge from Stephen Hansel’s winery in the Russian River Valley. He also has the wonderful Walter Hansel Wine & Bistro on Guerneville Road in Santa Rosa. Hansel reduced the crop size by 20%-30% through crop thinning in 2014 because of irregular berry size and improved the level of concentration. All of the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are bottled unfiltered. The 2013 Pinot Noirs, which Stephen Hansel described as more European and restrained than the 2012s, were all bottled unfined and unfiltered and are just now beginning to strut their stuff. All represent excellent value in Pinot Noir.
Dark red and blue fruits, smoke, wild flowers and spices flesh out in the 2013 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane. Round, succulent and hugely expressive, the 2013 is another wine built on pure balance and overall harmony. The 2013 captures an appealing combination of intensity and brightness.
