Vineyard:This wine is comprised of 11 historic 'Pezas" or blocks in the village of Portela. All the vines were planted by Jose Ramon Gayoso's sons in the early 1900's using a massal selection from the original Godello vineyard Pedrouzos.
Orientation:South facing slopes on the northern banks of the Sil river at an average of 300 meters in elevation.
Soil:Colluvial with shallow depth and derived from red and grey schist.
Viticulture:All vineyard work is done by hand in small plots. The work the soil naturally and do work in the vineyard based on circadian rhythms.
Vinification:Each plot is vinified seperately. The juice does a cold soak with the skins and then undergoes a wild yeast fermentation in French oak casks of 500L. The oak is 3rd or 4th use with light toast.
Aging:The wine ages in the casks on the lees for 6 months and then is racked to steel tanks where it ages and additional 12 months.
Tasting:A truly special wine that highlights the old vines of the Peddrouzos clones in the village of Portela. 2013 was a difficult year and showcases the characterisics of the Atlantic climate. There was a severe spring frost in April and a general cold spring that delayed harvest until late September. This vintage has complex herbal notes, citrus and minerality from the schist and decomposed slate.
