This opens with a classic Nebbiolo nose of blue flower, rose, perfumed berry, new leather, cake spice and a balsamic note. The ripe, juicy palate delivers crushed black cherry, black raspberry, cinnamon, white pepper and clove framed in youthfully assertive tannins. Drink 2018–2027.
The 2012 Barolo Massara is a very pretty wine. Succulent red cherry and floral notes give the 2012 a decidedly bright, lifted profile to play off the wine's pliant fruit. There is good density to the 2012, along with more than enough tannin and overall structure to suggest the wine will drink well for years to come. Slightly gamy undertones suggest the 2012 will always be a bit on the rustic side. Even so, this is a big step up from the 2011.
