|Soil:||Warm, shallow, well-drained soil, composed of fine clays and blocks of limestone subsoil.|
|Viticulture:||The vineyard is farmed using biodynamic practices and all grapes are harvested by hand, sorted once in the vineyard and again at the winery. Up to 10% of the crop may be rejected.|
|Vinification:||Vinification with traditional methods, open vat fermentation using native yeasts, 30% stem inclusion and minimal use of sulpher.|
|Aging:||The wine is aged in French barriques of which 30-75% is new depending on vintage.|
Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru from J L Trapet shows some signs of whole bunch fruit, although there is clearly adequate fruit behind it and it feels harmonious and intense. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a fine bead of acidity and just the right amount of piquancy. This is a relatively approachable grand cru, but it is heightened by its tension and linearity, its laser-like focus. This is very impressive. Tasted September 2017.
There is enough reduction present to dominate what appears to be ripe red berry fruit. Otherwise there is fine intensity to the rich, round and mouth coating middle weight plus flavors that immediately tighten up on the focused and impressively persistent finish. I like the balance as well as the seductive texture and I suspect that this will drink well earlier than usual.
