It is always a pleasure to welcome back a wine that was loved and missed. This one for probably 8 or 9 years. Now the Crozes is back in its nest…!
Although the Tardy family has been growing grapes for generations, they only began to estate-bottle in 1979. They farm 25 hectares of vines: 21 hectares of Syrah and 4 hectares of Marsanne. The average yields are a modest 40 hectoliters/hectare with average vine age of 30 years. The vineyards lie in Mercurol thought to be some of the best sectors within Crozes-Hermitage. Within the past few years, they have stopped using any chemical additives in their vineyards (practicing organic). The grapes are also hand harvested, 100% de-stemmed, fermented with natural yeasts.
The Crozes-Hermitage 2008 was aged in 1/3 each, tank, foudre and barrique (mostly used). There is lovely, dark, spicy (even juicy) fruit, and classic Northern Rhone spice (black and white pepper, juniper, some asian spices), a medium-full texture and lovely framing acidity.
We love wines that over-deliver and this is certainly one!
