Only good things can happen when you pull together a historic Napa Valley vineyard with one of California’s most know winemaker’s and a few more industry veterans and professionals. This combination of place and people is The Crane Assembly! Dave Phinney, the mastermind behind Orin Swift and The Prisoner has joined forces with friends and colleagues Kevin Fox, Darryl Browman and Bryan Sandoli to craft wines from a unique and historic portion of what is known today as the Dr. Crane Vineyard in St Helena.
The Crane Assembly is centered around a unique eight acre vineyard located in the gravel rich soils of southern St. Helena. It is believed that Dr. George Beldon Crane first established grapes on this site in 1885, making it one of the oldest vineyards in Napa Valley. Of the eight acres in production, approximately four acres are from the original plantings of Zinfandel. This four acre block has been continuously farmed for nearly one hundred and thirty years by a number of different people. In addition to Crane’s old vine section, there is also a 1.6 acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon, a 1.4 acre block of Petite Sirah and a few rows of Merlot. The Crane Assembly consists of three wines – Disciples (Zinfandel and Petite Sirah), El Coco (Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot and Cabernet) and the GB Crane Cabernet Sauvignon.
