Vineyard: The fruit comes from two remarkable locations. The Sauvignon Musque (a particularly exotic and aromatic clone of Sauvignon Blanc) is grown on a steep hillside high up on Kick Ranch on the backside of Spring Mountain. The Semillon element comes from 100 year old vines growing at 1800’ above Sonoma Valley in the incomparable Monte Rosso vineyard.
Orientation: Kick Ranch is a steep, southwest facing hillside. Monte Rosso is a west facing vineyard.
Soil: Kick Ranch has volcanic, rocky soils. Monte Rosso has bright-red, iron rich soils.
Viticulture: Monte Rosso was planted in the late 1800's. The vines are head pruned and sustainably farmed.
Vinification: Cuvee Karatas is whole cluster pressed and fermented completely in barrique-some new, some neutral, and a few made of stainless steel.
Aging: It is given battonage treatment to increase its richness and lies on its lees until just prior to bottling. The barrels for the blend are made by the former private barrel maker for Smith Haut Lafitte (one of my absolute favorite wines in the world)- who coopers tight grain French oak into barrels for this wine as he would for his former employer.

The 2015 Cuvée Karatas Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the latter from a parcel of Semillon planted in the 1880s in the Monte Rosso Vineyard. Morgan Peterson says it is “one-of-a-kind stuff” and there is no reason to doubt him. This is more of an over-the-top flamboyant, rather amazing wine with notes of orange marmalade, honeydew melon, jam, quince, white currants and flowers. There was an almost unctuous quality to the texture and super-concentration from these two varieties. Most of this is from dry-farmed vineyards and the honeyed, low-yields that were present in 2015 are translated into this wonderfully fresh, incredible wine that almost behaves like one of the great Ygrecs from Chateau d’Yquem. Drink it over the next 5-7 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last longer.

Bedrock's 2015 Cuvée Karatas, is a gorgeous Sauvignon/Semillon blend. Lemon confit, white flowers and orchard fruit are beautifully delineated, but it is the wine's textural balance and overall poise that truly stand out.
