Vineyard: After losing 90% of his crop to storms, Jean-Louis went in search of fruit for purchase and gratefully found hillside Fleurie parcels farmed by the Chanudet family.
Soil: Very fine topsoils, granite bedrock
Viticulture: Harvested late in October from 10 hectares of vines
Vinification: Semi-carbonic fermentation/maceration; no sulfur in vinification, all wild yeast fermentation
Aging: Aged in neutral barrel

Notes: From Fleurie vines farmed by the Chanudet family, this wines is red-fruited and bright with hints of citrus peel. It serves as an example of Jean-Louis Dutraive's indomitable spirit - despite the odds - and deft hands in the cellar.

The 2016 Fleurie comes from purchased grapes since the vines were affected by hail (just cropping two hectoliters per hectare!) This was raised in foudres with a little stainless steel. It has a light redcurrant and strawberry-scented bouquet with a hint of tomato vine. The palate is well balanced with fresh acidity, simple but nicely focused with tart red cherry on the short finish. Not bad, although I have certainly encountered better vintages in the past due to a more benevolent growing season.

The 2016 Fleurie from Jean-Louis Dutraive is beautifully light in color and tips the scales at a cool 12.5 percent octane. The bouquet is bright and red fruity, offering up a fine constellation of strawberries, cherries, a complex base of soil tones, a bit of gamebird, roses and just a bit of fresh thyme in the upper register. On the palate the wine is tangy, medium-bodied and intensely flavored, with lovely focus and grip, very good nascent complexity and a long, gently tannic and very nicely balanced finish. This has the raciness of a very natural wine, but also a good core of red fruit and the stable structure to age. A most impressive middleweight. 2017-2030+.
