This wine has the characteristic power for which the appellation is known, coupled with supple textures and notable elegance.
The Gigondas was matured mostly in concrete but there’s 10% new oak and 20% second use barrels that creep into the mix. In 2015, that’s worked magic, adding dried spices and vanilla to ripe black cherry fruit and a plush texture. Give this a year or two to show more of its terroir and drink it over the next decade or so.
Deep ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes candied dark berries, apricot and incense, and a smoky nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering juicy, spice-laced blackberry, peach nectar and candied lavender flavors that tighten up steadily on the back half. Smooth and sweet on the gently tannic finish, which hangs on with strong, spicy tenacity.
