Vintage: 1985
Bottle sizes: 750 ML
Country: France
Region: Loire
Appellation: Coteaux-Du-Layon
Wine type: Sweet / Fortified
Varietals: Chenin Blanc
Vineyard: Historic property of 145 hectares, of which only 10% is from the Coteaux du Layon appellation.
Soil: Schist, limestone and chalk
Viticulture: Coteaux du Layon rarely gets much botrytis, and consequently many of the sweeter-styled chenin blancs are a result of the grapes dehydrating on the vine, rather than being concentrated by noble rot.
Vinification: Fermentation in apoxy- or glass-lined concrete.
Aging: Ages for 6-8 months before being bottled. Wine is held for at least a decade of cellar ageing prior to release.
Notes: Along with 1989, 1985 is touted as one of the top vintages of this decade. It was a sunny year that created this rich and round delight. Ripe apricot and caramel aromatics dominate the nose, followed by an incredible depth of fruit on the palate that finishes with flavors of creme brulee and a slight bitterness that keep you coming back for more. Stunning stuff.

The Moulin Touchais 1985 Coteaux du Layon smells alluringly of baked apple, apple jelly, pink pineapple, and heady flowers. Lusciously rich on the palate, yet not lacking cut or clarity, it carries honey, baked apple and grapefruit into a long, rich, if not rivetingly complex finish. Heaven knows I would be delighted for the opportunity to sip a glass of either of these in a restaurant, whether as aperitif, with foie gras, or in lieu of dessert

The 1985 vintage of Moulin Touchais has now reached its honeyed apogee of peak maturity and is drinking very well indeed. The bouquet delivers a fine blend of orange, quince paste, a touch of citrus peel, new leather, tea leaves and salty soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with tertiary layers of complexity, good acids and fine length and grip on the focused and classy finish. Not a blockbuster year for Moulin Touchais, the 1985 has aged very gracefully and is now at its peak. 2015-2040. - Jon Gilman
