Silice Viticultores is a project of family and friendship, founded in 2013 by brothers Juan and Carlos Rodríguez and winemaker Fredi Torres. As the name implies, Silice is organized around the viticultores of Ribeira Sacra, whose work on the vertiginous slopes that line the Sil River canyon is the lifeblood of the project. Juan and Carlos are from the tiny village of Barantes in the municipality of Sober (Lugo province), prime Ribeira Sacra winegrowing territory. Galician-born Fredi Torres grew up between Pontevedra and Switzerland and honed his craft as a winemaker in the Priorat before expanding to multiple regions and projects in Catalunya and beyond. He proposed a wine project to his friends Juan and Carlos, who wanted to connect to their roots, work alongside their friends and neighbors to preserve the ancient vineyards around Barantes, and express the precious landscape through wine. Silice was born.
The lineup of small-to-tiny-production wines are racy, fresh, and fun, yet seriously elegant and built to age; they achieve very focused expressions of individual parcels and zones, without sacrificing the fierce natural energy of the region. Organic farming practices and a minimal approach to winemaking (delicate extraction, low SO2, gentle use of oak) guarantee exciting snapshots of place and vintage every year.
