  • The wines are produced from a partnership of top growers in the Douro.
  • The young simple red known just as “Tinto” has to be one of the best values in wine.

Marquês de Pombal, founder of the Douro Appellation (Região Demarcada do Douro), selected the best wines from the region, targeting them to the most demanding connoisseurs in the country and in the rest of the world. They were the so-called “feitoria wines” and they gained deserved respect for their extreme quality.

In the year 2000, some Douro grape growers (lavradores in Portuguese) came together to realize a dream as simple as it was ambitious: to join “Lavradores” to make “Feitoria” wines. What motivated those farmers was the desire to produce quality wines, since the majority of the grapes from the Douro were used to produce Port wine at that time. Thus, Lavradores de Feitoria was born, which brings together different knowledge and experiences, ancestral and contemporary practices, from viticulture to commercialization.

Vineyards and Grapes

The different altitudes and the diversity of soils resulted in a diversity of terroirs.

The vineyards that make up Lavradores de Feitoria are dispersed throughout the Douro Wine Region, either in the Baixo or Cima Corgo or in the Douro Superior. The fact that the grapes come from 20 different “Quintas” contributes to the complexity and character of Lavradores de Feitoria wines. The versatility and multiplicity of native grape varieties, vineyards of different ages, the different altitudes and the diversity of soils leads to a diversity of terroirs that greatly “feeds” the complexity of their Douro wines.

Among their vineyards, some over 80 years old, we can find as examples of red grape varieties: Alvarelhão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca or Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional; and white grape varieties: Boal, Códega, Gouveio, Malvasia, Sauvignon Blanc and Viosinho.

The Wines

A mark of the character of the Douro.

Lavradores de Feitoria's founding came at a time when the Douro began to assert itself as a world wine value, reinforcing two adjectives for the region's wines: elegance and balance. All wines from Lavradores de Feitoria – from entry level to high end - are balanced, elegant, and food friendly, but always with the character of the Douro.

At Lavradores de Feitoria they produce blended wines and what they call terroir wines. In the blended group you find the great value red we call Lavradores Tinto which is made from a rigorous selection of grapes from the different estates, which when blended together reveal the complexity, richness and tradition of Douro blended wines. In the Terroir wines group, are wines like, Meruge and Quinta da Costa das Aguaneiras, which are intended to reflect the character and individuality of a given vineyard parcel.

Currently, all their “Quintas” practice Integrated Protection Viticulture and in one of them they have certified organic production. They are also leading a project for social sustainability that will be launched soon.
